Feds close portion of Gulf of Maine herring fishery

The National Marine Fisheries Service closed on Sunday the Atlantic herring fishery for a portion of the Gulf of Maine until May.

The Associated Press reported that the closure, which will remain in effect until May 31, 2015, is due to the fishery already exceeding 92% of its total allowable catch in the inshore Gulf of Maine sector for October, November and December.

Vessels with federal permits for Atlantic herring are not allowed to retain or land more than 2,000 pounds of the fish per day or trip in the closed area, according to the AP report. Vessels participating in other fisheries are allowed to retain and land an incidental catch of herring from the closed area if it is less than 2,000 pounds per trip.
