USM faculty cuts to have ripple effects

The University of Southern Maine’s plan to cut 50 faculty positions will spur the end of the school’s languages program and a restructuring of two graduate programs.

The Bangor Daily News reported that 25 faculty members of positions targeted for elimination have accepted retirement packages. Another 25 faculty members are expected to be laid off.

USM’s Modern and Classical Languages Department will be eliminated as a result of the three professors working in that department losing their jobs. The department’s French major had already been approved for elimination last week.

USM’s Muskie School of Public Service will merge two master’s degree programs — public policy and management and community planning and development — into one as a result of losing six faculty members triggered by the cuts.

The proposed reductions will help USM cut $6 million from its $134 million budget. The university is planning to propose an additional $10 million in cuts later this year.
