Dollar General to open five Maine stores

Dollar General Corp., the country's largest small-box retailer, is expected to hire up to 50 employees for five stores under construction in central and southern Maine.

Dollar General said Tuesday that its stores in Auburn, Lewiston, Oakland, Turner and North Berwick will each hire approximately six to 10 employees, depending on the individual needs of each store. The retailer's first store is expected to open by spring 2015, with others to follow.

“We know convenience is a major factor in our customers' shopping decisions as we generally serve customers within a 3- to 5-mile radius, or 10-minute drive," Dan Nieser, Dollar General’s senior vice president of real estate and store development, said in a prepared statement. "These new locations in Maine are a great fit for Dollar General and we look forward to being part of these communities.”

Competing retailer Family Dollar Stores Inc. announced earlier this year that it plans to open new locations in the Lewiston-Auburn area. The retailer is currently slated to be sold to a competing retailer, Dollar Tree Inc., for an offer valued at $8.5 billion. Dollar General has made a counteroffer valued at $9.7 billion.
