Towns eye tax relief due to revaluations of mills

Madison selectmen have scheduled a meeting on Nov. 24 with Skowhegan selectmen to discuss the possibility of pursuing legislation seeking tax relief from the state to help both communities recover from significant decreases in property taxes from Madison Paper Industries and Sappi Fine Paper.

The Waterville Morning Sentinel reported that Madison selectmen discussed Monday night the possibility of seeking greater educational funding from the state to help mitigate a $150 million decrease in Madison Paper Industries’ valuation.

Both communities are considering appeals of their state valuation, the newspaper reported, citing Sappi’s $100 million valuation decrease at its Skowhegan mill.

State funding for education is based on the average state valuation of a community over the last three years, which town officials say does not accurately reflect the property valuation decreases at both mills.
