Work begins on $6.5M memory care facility
Construction work began this week on a new $6.5 million, 64-bed memory care facility in Lewiston — a facility that is said to be the first of its kind in the area.
Woodlands Senior Living, which operates five senior living communities in Maine, announced that company, state and local officials were at the site’s 45 Mollison Way location Monday for an official groundbreaking ceremony. The facility is meant to address the area’s growing demand for memory care, the company said.
Woodlands said the memory care facility will serve people suffering from Alzheimer’s disease, other forms of dementia and related memory impairments. It is the Lewiston-Auburn area’s first-ever purpose-built, ground-up facility of its kind, the company added.
Matthew Walters, chief operating officer of Woodlands, said in a prepared statement that “no other municipality has been as accommodating as the city of Lewiston” when compared to facility developments the company has done in other communities.
“We had an aggressive schedule in order to be able to break ground in the fall,” Walters added. “Everyone in the city and planning board did everything they could to fast track this. The city has been fantastic to work with and we’re proud to be joining the city of Lewiston.”
