Old Town plan could call for anchor retailer

A master plan for redevelopment of Old Town’s downtown could call for a major retailer like Trader Joe’s or L.L.Bean to move in and spur economic activity there.

The Bangor Daily News reported that Old Town officials are working with engineering firm Wright-Pierce and residents to develop a master planning document for the city’s downtown, along with the former Old Town canoe factory site.

At a Monday workshop, several attendees said they would like to see a store like Trader Joe’s move into Old Town’s downtown to spur activity and development there. Other suggestions included increased public transportation and student housing for the nearby University of Maine campus, an outlet mall, a Stephen King theme park and upscale housing.

A draft of the master plan is expected to be made public next spring.
