Howland natural gas contractor abruptly closes

The abrupt closure of a Portland-based contractor has some wondering what will happen to approximately 165 customers who paid in advance for natural gas home heating systems.

The Portland Press Herald reported that the sudden closure last week of Howland-based Dave Ireland Builders has impacted customers living in Cumberland, Falmouth and Yarmouth, where Summit Natural Gas of Maine is in the middle of expanding its natural gas pipeline.

Jason Lamb, a Windham heating and plumbing contractor who had been working with Dave Ireland, told the newspaper that he estimates around 165 people did not have their heating systems converted after paying Ireland an advance. Cumberland Town Manager William Shane said the advance was between $1,500 and $3,000.

The town of Cumberland is currently working with its town attorney, police chief and the Cumberland County district attorney, Shane said. The town manager also has encouraged customers to file complaints with Summit and the Maine Attorney General’s Office.

“This individual company has caused a lot of damage to potential future conversions and I am urging Summit to step up to help in some way,” Shane wrote in a message on Cumberland’s website. “I believe the more information that is shared the closer we can bring this to a better resolution for all.”

Mike Minkos, president of Summit, said it’s unclear if his company can help the contractor’s customers who paid for services they have not received.
