Verso delays Bucksport mill closure

The Verso Paper mill in Bucksport will now stay open until the end of the year, giving a little relief to nearly 550 workers who initially thought the closure would happen Monday.

Bill Cohen, Verso’s Bucksport spokesman, told the Portland Press Herald that Verso moved back the closure date after realizing that Dec. 1 was an unrealistic deadline. The company will now end paper production Dec. 4 and work to shut down the plant by Dec. 31, he said.

That means the mill’s employees will receive paychecks for work through the end of the year, which will help them through the holiday season, Emery Deabay, a union spokesman said.

Cohen said there are parties interested in purchasing the mill, but deferred further comment to Verso’s corporate headquarters in Memphis.
