International consulting firm Stantec, which has three offices in Maine, has been selected to lead a long-term scientific study of the Arctic marine ecosystem, which was spurred, in part, by growing concerns surrounding climate change and sustainability.

Stantec announced on Tuesday that staff from its Maine offices, including Project Director John Lortie, will work on the Marine Arctic Ecosystem Study, which will be conducted along the Beaufort Sea Shelf, from Alaskan to Canadian waters.

The study, which is being coordinated by the federal Bureau of Ocean Management along with a number of public and private research partners, will examine the Beaufort Sea in order to better understand the connections between marine life, human uses and sea ice, among other things.

The information gained in the study will be used to help governments, industries and communities make decisions regarding issues of regulation, resource management, economic development and environmental protection.

“We are thrilled to lead this significant Beaufort Sea study,” Lortie said in a prepared statement. “The health of the Arctic region ecosystem has immediate as well as long-term and far-reaching impacts. The results of this work will strengthen the foundation on which a multitude of generational decisions will be based.”
