Auburn officials say no to expanded TIF
The Auburn City Council said it will not consider an expanded Tax Increment Financing district for an industrial park that contains Hartt Transportation Systems.
The Lewiston Sun Journal reported that the city council will vote Dec. 15 on the proposed TIF district for the industrial park, which includes Hartt's $5.3 million facility. The deal would refund Hartt for 40% of new taxes it pays on the property, with the funds being earmarked for utility and road work. Councilors have already agreed to that part of the deal as part of a development agreement.
Councilors said they will not consider an option for an expanded version of the TIF deal — which would have supported other projects — stating the need to protect the interest of taxpayers.
An expanded TIF district would have diverted more funds for other projects, including a new revolving loan fund for other businesses, a skills training program and Auburn's economic development program, among other items.
