Sales of L.L.Bean boots way up this year

If you’re looking for a new pair of L.L.Bean’s signature Bean boots this winter, you may be out of luck. The Freeport-based retailer said there are tens of thousands of backorders.

L.L.Bean spokeswoman Carolyn Beem told Boston.com that as many as 100,000 customers won’t have their orders fulfilled until after the holiday season because of a surge in sales. She said sales of Bean boots significantly increased this year to around 450,000 pairs.

As for why L.L.Bean is seeing such a spike in sales, Beem said millennials and teenagers are the reason, adding that “without changing anything, [Bean boots are] back in style."
