Cascades Auburn Fiber fined by EPA

Cascades Auburn Fiber, a leading de-inked pulp provider in the Northeast, has been fined $65,000 by the federal Environmental Protection Agency for allegedly violating the Clean Water Act and federal Oil Pollution Prevention regulations.

The Lewiston Sun Journal reported that the fines, which were announced Monday, stem from an October 2012 inspection that found alleged deficiencies at the Auburn de-inking plant that reportedly have since been corrected. The settlement is not an admission of guilt.

A sister plant in Connecticut, Norampac New England, also will pay a $100,000 fine, the newspaper reported, adding that both fines were agreed to in a settlement between the EPA and the companies' owner, Cascades USA, in which the company didn't have to admit guilt.

Cascades Auburn Fiber employs 44 people and specializes in de-inking the pulp of recycled paper, according to Cascades USA's website.
