Turnpike revenue from out-of-staters increases

The Maine Turnpike Authority said toll revenue from out-of-state motorists has increased as more Mainers shift to using E-ZPass transponders to save money.

The turnpike authority projects that out-of-staters will account for 66% of the $125 million in revenue that is expected this year, according to the Portland Press Herald. In 2012, out-of-staters accounted for 54% of the $105 million collected in tolls by the turnpike authority.

The turnpike authority's projection for increased revenue from out-of-staters who pay cash is based on a year-round survey of license plates on the highway.

While the turnpike increased tolls by 20% and collected an additional $20 million in revenue as a result, Mainers are expected to pay $5.6 million less in 2014 than they did two years ago. Peter Mills, the turnpike authority's executive director, told the Press Herald that the agency has been trying to boost revenue without creating an extra financial burden for Mainers. He said Mainers should consider using the E-ZPass because it gives toll discounts and lowers costs for the agency.
