Maine employers see larger 'skills gap,' report says

A new report on the so-called “skills gap” in Maine’s workforce found that employers see it as a larger issue than the state’s higher education officials.

The report found that while 72% of higher education officials think graduates have enough skills to enter the workforce, only 42% of employers share the same belief, according to the Maine Public Broadcasting Network.

The report by the Maine Chamber of Commerce and Maine Development Foundation is part of a series called “Making Maine Work.”

"Cianbro wants welders who can weld, but they want welders who can solve problems in real time," said Christopher Quinn, president of Kaplan University in Maine. "[Maine Medical Center] wants nurses who can deliver world-class patient care, but, at the same time, be able to write and document what they have delivered."

A program by the Maine Development Foundation called the “Next Step Maine Employers Initiative” seeks to address the skills gap issue, said Ryan Neale, the organization's program director.
