Maine unemployment hardly budges in November

Maine's unemployment rate in November was 5.7%, a hundredth of a percentage point lower than the previous month and not quite 1% less than it was a year ago.

The Maine Department of Labor reported on Friday that an estimated 40,200 people were unemployed last month, 5,400 fewer than a year ago.

The national unemployment rate in October was 5.8%, unchanged from the previous month, but a decrease from 7.2% one year ago.

Maine's unemployment rate remained just under the average of 5.8% for New England states. The state was lower than Massachusetts (5.8%), Connecticut (6.5%) and Rhode Island (7.1%), and higher than New Hampshire (4.1%) and Vermont (4.3%).

Maine's employment-to-population percentage stood at 60.9% in October, a miniscule decrease from the previous month. October was the 86th consecutive month the state has been above the national average of 59.2%.

Unemployment rates are seasonally adjusted.
