Maine retailers report strong holiday sales

Local retailers say they're having one of the best holiday shopping seasons in recent memory.

Curtis Picard, executive director of the Retail Association of Maine, told the Portland Press Herald that he's been hearing that news from many of the association's members this season. Low gas prices and good weather are to thank, he said.

Topher Mallory, CEO of Mexicali Blues, which runs six retail stores in Maine, told the newspaper that holiday sales are expected to see a significant increase over last year. Other retailers, like Portland Trading Co., offered similar reports.

The Press Herald noted that national retail sales are projected to reach $616.9 billion in November and December, a 4.1% increase over the same period last year, according to the National Retail Federation. National retail sales haven't seen such a large increase since 2011.
