Health care, other industries projected to grow

Maine's health care, hospitality and education industries are projected to grow while the state's manufacturing-related industry will continue to decline, according to a new state report.

A new report from the Maine Department of Labor's Center for Workforce Research and Information estimates that the state's total number of payroll jobs will increase 2.3% by 2022, according to the Bangor Daily News.

The report includes 10-year projections for various industries and other observations. The state's share of jobs in the manufacturing and goods-producing sectors, for instance, is set to decline to 13% by 2022, down from 18% in 2000 and 44% in 1950. On the other hand, jobs in health care, professional and business services, hospitality and education services are all projected to grow in the next 10 years.

The report also found that employers in growing industries will increasingly prefer critical thinking and decision-making skills over operating machinery and related inspecting skills, adding that “the nature of work increasingly demands higher levels of literacy and more sophisticated technology competencies.”
