Lewiston, Bangor beauty schools abruptly close

Mr. Bernard’s School of Hair Fashion’s campuses in Lewiston and Bangor abruptly closed on Monday, leaving students wondering how they will complete their education.

The school’s owner, Mary Hunter, told WCSH6-TV the school decided to close the campuses Monday because operating them was no longer financially viable. The closure happened a day before classes were supposed to begin for nearly 90 students.

Hunter said she is trying to help students get transferred to other schools.

The Bangor Daily News reported that the Maine Department of Professional and Financial Regulation, which handles the licensing of beauty schools, is looking into the issue, but hadn’t received any formal complaints as of Tuesday, according to spokesman Doug Dunbar.

Diane Ellis, a spokeswoman for the Better Business Bureau, said the school lost accreditation from the bureau in November after it failed to address complaints.
