Staples data breach exposes Maine credit cards
National retailer Staples said its stores in Brunswick and Biddeford were among 115 stores nationwide impacted by a data breach last fall that exposed credit and debit card information.
The Portland Press Herald reported that Maine customers who shopped at the two stores between Aug. 10, 2014, and Sept. 16, 2014, have been asked to monitor their cards for suspicious activity. Staples did not say how many customers in Maine were impacted.
Staples said the data breach was the result of hackers installing malware on point-of-sale systems at the retailer’s stores that exposed transaction information. The breach only impacted a fraction of the company’s more than 1,400 stores nationwide.
As Mainebiz reported in December, large companies aren’t the only ones susceptible to data breaches and other forms of cyberattacks. Portland-based restaurant chain Otto Pizza last summer was the victim of a data breach, potentially exposing the credit and debit card numbers of around 900 customers. The National Small Business Association found in its 2013 technology survey that 44% of 845 business owners said their business had been targeted by a cyberattack.
