Maine Medical Center opens 24/7 pharmacy

Maine Medical Center on Monday opened its own 24-hour pharmacy.

The Portland Press Herald reported that The Pharmacy, as it is called, will be open to patients and the public, but will only focus on selling prescriptions and giving advice. The Portland hospital is hiring 10 pharmacists and 25 pharmacy assistants. It’s also making $1 million in capital investments to renovate space inside the hospital.

Maine Med said it's the first 24-hour pharmacy in the state.

Dr. Michael Baumann, Maine Med’s chief of emergency medicine, told the newspaper The Pharmacy will be convenient for patients, allowing them to pick up medications after finishing surgery and in some cases having them delivered to their bedsides.

The Pharmacy will be open 24 hours a day, seven hours a week, including holidays. The nearest 24/7 pharmacy is in Rochester, N.H.
