Minimum wage hike proposed for Bangor
A Bangor city councilor is proposing a minimum wage increase for the city, though it’s a little more modest in comparison to the proposal currently being mulled in Portland.
The Bangor Daily News reported that Joe Baldacci’s proposal seeks to increase Bangor’s minimum wage from $7.50 an hour to $8.25 in 2016, then to $9 in 2015 and $9.75 in 2018, with subsequent increases based on the previous year’s consumer price index. Portland’s proposal would increase the minimum wage first to $9.50, with annual increases to follow, though officials recently said a planned increase for 2015 is not likely at this point.
Baldacci, who is the brother of former Gov. John Baldacci, said he is proposing the minimum wage increase because there has been no increase for nearly six years.
