State nears purchase of Bar Harbor terminal

The Maine Port Authority is close to reaching a deal in purchasing Bar Harbor’s idle international ferry terminal from Canada.

The Mount Desert Islander reported that a memo from Bar Harbor Town Manager Cornell Knight indicated that while a deal is close, the Maine Port Authority is seeking a study that would look into business opportunities, operations and other aspects of the ferry’s site.

Bermello, Ajamil and Associates, the Miami-based consulting firm that would conduct the study, released a previous study in December 2011 finding that investing $16.7 million into terminal renovations would allow cruise ships to anchor closer to shore. That, the study said, would help ensure the terminal’s and waterfront’s financial viability.
