Pan Am faces EPA fines in Waterville

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has proposed a $375,000 fine for Pan Am Railways for alleged environmental violations at its Waterville rail yard.

The Morning Sentinel reported that EPA filed an administrative complaint against the North Billerica, Mass.-based company on Jan. 30, alleging that Pan Am violated the federal Clean Water Act by dumping polluted water into the Kennebec River and not maintaining a prevention plan concerning the mitigation of potential oil spills.

Cynthia Scarano, an executive vice president at Pan Am, told the newspaper that she’s not “denying or admitting” to the alleged violations, adding that the company will have further comment once it completes informal settlement discussions with the EPA.
