South Portland hires Boston firm to fight lawsuit

The city of South Portland has hired Boston law firm Foley Hoag to help fight a lawsuit launched by Portland Pipe Line Corp. over a controversial ordinance passed last year.

The Portland Press Herald reported that law firm, hired by a unanimous vote by the South Portland City Council on Monday, is being enlisted to defend the city’s Clear Skies ordinance, which bans the loading of crude oil onto marine vessels and related activities.

The city has set up a fund to raise money for fighting the lawsuit, in part because it’s unknown how much the legal effort will cost. The city’s corporation counsel, Jensen Baird Gardner & Henry of Portland, will be assisted by Foley Hoag.
