Nonprofit buys former Elizabeth Arden spa

A nonprofit supporting combat-wounded veterans has purchased the former estate of beauty magnate Elizabeth Arden, who was once one of the wealthiest women in the world.

The Associated Press reported that the Travis Mills Foundation announced on Tuesday its purchase of the 17-acre property in the town of Rome. After building the property as a summer home in the 1920s, Arden had converted the estate into the Maine Chance Spa, which was said to have attracted many celebrities, including actress Judy Garland.

The veterans nonprofit said it will turn the estate into a “smart home” that will provide recreational and reintegration services for combat-wounded veterans.
