Complaint: Verso still owes severance payments

A union is alleging that Verso Paper still owes severance payments to most of its members who worked at the company’s former Bucksport mill.

The Bangor Daily News reported that the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers Local 1821 recently filed a complaint with the Maine Bureau of Labor Standards. The union claims most of its members are still owed roughly $357,000 in severance payments and that most of Verso’s former employees could be owed up to $3 million.

Verso spokesman Bill Cohen told the newspaper the company has made what it believes to be the correct payments approved by the state, previously reported to be about $18 million. The state labor board is currently reviewing the union’s complaint.
