Rockport dentist pays to settle fraud claim

A Rockport dentist has agreed to pay nearly $500,000 as part of a settlement with federal and state investigators alleging that he fraudulently billed MaineCare for improper claims.

Dr. Daniel P. Schecter has paid the settlement amount, U.S. Attorney Thomas E. Delahanty II announced on Wednesday from his Portland office. The settlement amount represents the amount that Schecter improperly billed between Jan. 1, 2009, and Nov. 19, 2012.

The state of Maine and federal government had filed a civil complaint against Schecter after an investigation by the U.S. Attorney’s Office, the U.S. Department of Human and Health Services and the Maine Attorney General’s office. The complaint alleged that Schecter had improperly billed MaineCare for services that weren’t medically necessary, for unsubstantiated tooth extractions and for improperly justified narcotics prescriptions.
