Demolition of Bucksport mill could start this spring

A representative of American Iron & Metal, the Canadian scrap metal company that purchased the shuttered Verso Corp. paper mill in Bucksport for $60 million in February, told town officials on Wednesday the firm hopes to begin demolishing the site this spring.

The Bangor Daily News reported that Jeff McGlin, AIM’s U.S. vice president for development, told Bucksport officials the company plans to submit a demolition permit application to the town by the end of March, with the goals of starting work around by early May and completing the demolition by late summer of 2016.

Bucksport’s town council is expected to consider at its April 9 meeting the company’s request that some elements of the town’s demolition ordinance be waived in order to facilitate that time schedule, the newspaper reported.

AIM has scheduled an auction on March 24 to sell some of the former paper mill’s papermaking equipment, including generators, welders, roll grinders, hand tools and some trucks.
