DA: Unemployment fraud hurts businesses

A recent string of unemployment fraud cases has prompted the district attorney for Hancock and Washington counties to remind the public that such cases can hurt businesses.

District Attorney Matthew Foster announced on Monday that grand juries in Hancock and Washington counties have indicted two people on charges of theft by deception and unemployment fraud within the past month, representing more than $25,000 in stolen funds, according to the Bangor Daily News. Foster said eight more cases, representing more than $60,000 in stolen funds, will be presented in court in the next few months.

“Unemployment fraud is not a victimless crime,” Foster was quoted as saying in a statement. “[It] causes business owners to pay more in unemployment insurance tax,” which could take away funds that could otherwise be used for capital improvements or increased wages.
