Thomaston car dealership sued over ageism claim
Shepard Chrysler Dodge Jeep, a car dealership in Thomaston, is being sued by a former employee who claims he was fired because of his age.
The Bangor Daily News reported that Joseph Castelluci, 71, filed a lawsuit against the car dealership in Knox County Superior Courts last week. He seeks compensation for losing his job, which earned him $40,000 annually. The dealership has yet to respond.
In the lawsuit, Castelluci alleges that the dealership's manager would direct disparaging remarks about older people to him in front of other co-workers, and that a 20-year-old man was given Castelluci's office before he was fired in July 2014.
Castelluci said despite having some medical issues that prompted him to take a month off in 2013, he had the highest gross per vehicle at the dealership that year. He had been taking medication that caused him to be drowsy, he said, but it only caused him to doze off briefly a few times when customers weren't there.
