FairPoint could face fines over service standards

The Maine Public Utilities Commission is expanding its investigation into poor landline service quality provided by FairPoint Communications, which could face fines as a result.

The Bangor Daily News reported that the PUC decided on Tuesday to review FairPoint’s far-below service quality reports for October, November and December of last year. The PUC will determine if FairPoint should face penalties for not meeting service quality standards set by the state.

In a February filing, FairPoint asked the PUC not to investigate its late 2014 reports, saying that poor service was the result of severe weather and a massive workers strike that lasted from October to February. FairPoint said the strike and weather were unforeseeable events.
