Retail complex proposed for Northeast Harbor

A local jewelry store owner has proposed a four-building retail and apartment complex in Northeast Harbor that already has three businesses tentatively lined up.

The Mount Desert Islander reported that Sam Shaw, owner of Shaw Contemporary Jewelry, plans to build the “Marketplace” complex on a vacant .45-acre lot at 131 Main St. The town's planning board is expected to consider the approval of the development’s subdivision plan on April 8.

Shaw said he has received interest from a hair and nail salon, a wine and book shop and a women’s accessories store for one the complex’s proposed buildings. In addition, a take-out lunch shop is planned for another building. Construction on the first two buildings is expected to start this summer, and a later phase will include a large year-round restaurant and four apartment units.
