LePage wants to deregulate lodging businesses

A senior health policy adviser for Gov. Paul LePage said the governor wants to remove all licensing requirements for lodging businesses.

Holly Lusk, the adviser, made the comments during a Monday legislative hearing on a bill that would add licensing requirements for short-term home rentals, according to the Bangor Daily News. LePage opposes the bill that would impact short-term home rentals that appear on websites like Airbnb, Lusk said, instead preferring to level the playing field by removing licensing requirements for all lodging businesses.

The bill, LD 436, which is sponsored by Sen. John Patrick, D-Rumford, would add safety and health requirements for short-term home rentals that lodging businesses must follow to receive a license. Some people on Monday testified that they use short-term home rentals as a way to supplement their income, adding that such regulations would force many of them to close their doors and therefore limit lodging options for tourists as a result.
