Bangor officials eye local option sales tax

The Bangor City Council’s Finance Committee has expressed general support of a local sales tax option that would be used to offset the tax burden on property owners.

However, the committee acknowledged that it’s unlikely the state Legislature would act soon on allowing municipalities to levy such a tax, according to the Bangor Daily News. Councilor Ben Sprague, who proposed the idea, said he plans to lobby state lawmakers on the issue.

Sprague said a 0.31% local tax would bring in about $5 million, replacing a decline in revenue-sharing from the state. Though the committee generally supported the idea, Councilor Gibran Graham said he was concerned about the impact a local tax could have on small businesses.
