Tribal casino proposed for Aroostook
The Houlton Band of Maliseet Indians is making another push for a casino that would be located on tribal land in Aroostook County.
The Sun Journal reported that a proposed bill by Henry John Bear, the band’s non-voting representative to the House of Representatives, would allow the tribe to move forward with a casino with up to 350 slot machines. Bear told the newspaper that the measure has bipartisan support.
Bear said he estimates the casino could bring in up to $200 million a year in gross profits, based on a recent study finding opportunity for the gaming industry in northern Maine. Some 35% of slot machine net income and 16% of table game net income from the casino would be shared with more than 12 towns in Washington and Aroostook counties, along with Aroostook County’s government, all of Maine’s tribes and for a scholarship fund.
