Job training program helps ex-Verso workers
Some workers who were laid off from Verso Corp.’s former Bucksport mill are being retrained for woodworking and cabinetmaking jobs as part of a collaborative program between Eastern Maine Community College and two other groups.
The community college announced on Thursday that the 10 former Verso workers are among a dozen displaced workers participating in the program, made possible by a collaboration between EMCC, Eastern Maine Development Corp. and Maine Quality Centers.
“We have seen an increasing workforce need in Eastern Maine’s boatbuilding companies, as well as fine furniture and cabinetmaking businesses,” Matt McLaughlin, director of business and industry for EMCC, said in a prepared statement. “This training program will help former Verso workers get the education and skills needed to break into this strong labor market.”
Southwest Harbor-based Hinckley Yachts and other boatbuilding companies have committed to holding interviews and potentially hiring the displaced workers, according to the community college. Those companies were consulted in developing the retraining program.
The program, which is expected to conclude in July, will give the displaced workers a number of industry-recognized skills certifications.
