Freeport retail project hits hurdle with town
A proposal to build a new retail complex in Freeport has hit a regulatory obstacle after city officials expressed some concerns about the project’s design.
The Times Record reported that the Freeport Town Council decided to delay its decision on a zoning change request that would have allowed Boston-based Berenson Associates to develop the retail project at 56 and 58 Main St.
Berenson’s request for a contract zone, which would allow one corner of the proposed building to exceed the area’s 35-foot height limit, is one of the concerns that gave town councilors pause. The town council also discussed concerns about the large amount of glass in the building’s design because of the impact it could have on birds.
Al Yebba, a developer with Berenson, told the newspaper he is confident that a resolution can be reached with the town. Berenson owns the nearby Freeport Village Station retail complex.
