Deadline nears for seafood business contest

The deadline is approaching for a national seafood business competition that is giving away a number of prizes, along with an opportunity to meet with investors.

Coastal Enterprises Inc. (also known as CEI) said on Thursday that the deadline for the Fish 2.0 competition is April 27. CEI is a sponsor of the competition, which is giving away more than $180,000 in cash prizes and professional services.

What could make the competition even more appealing is the opportunity to meet with investors and make new strategic partners, which CEI said could result in new investments ranging from $100,000 to more than $10 million. CEI said it’s encouraging New England fisheries and aquaculture businesses to apply, noting that Maine-based Acadia Harvest was named a runner-up last year.

“CEI has a 35-year history of investing in fisheries and aquaculture, and we’ve seen both financial and impact performance from these deals,” Dick Clime, CEI’s Working Waterfront project developer, said in a prepared statement. “Fish 2.0 draws a large number of new, quality businesses to the attention of investors, and also enables them to develop their business plans and access needed capital.”

Over 15 corporate industry leaders are supporting Fish 2.0, including Pentair, Google Oceans Program and RSF Social Finance, CEI said, adding that “the breadth of sponsors reflects a growing interest in the seafood sector among investors with expertise in technology, supply chain operations and food systems.”
