Google contest chooses Orono startup as finalist

Google has named the CEO of Orono-based Cerahelix as a finalist in the technology giant’s “Solve for X,” a worldwide competition aimed at solving global issues.

The Portland Press Herald reported that Susan MacKay was among four finalists chosen from a pool of 76 applicants at Google’s East Coast finals in February. The winners will be named after Google completes finals in 10 other regions across the globe.

Google chose MacKay as a finalist for her company’s filtration device that recycles industrial waste water using DNA-sized pores. The product is being pushed as a way to address water scarcity and will be marketed to oil and gas companies that use large amounts of fresh water when drawing natural gas from underground, a process known as “fracking.”
