Canadian LNG firm seeks passage through Maine

Nova Scotia-based liquefied natural gas exporter Bear Head LNG is seeking to send fuel from central and western Canada through New England for export into foreign markets.

The Bangor Daily News reported that Bear Head LNG, which is owned by Australian company Liquefied Natural Gas Ltd., is asking the U.S. Department of Energy for permission to use 1.2 billion cubic feet per day of natural gas pipeline capacity in 25-year contracts. The gas would be sent through the Maritimes and Northeast Pipeline and reach its destination in Calais.

If Bear Head LNG used that capacity, it could increase natural gas prices by as much as 1.8% in New England between 2019 and 2033, according to an analysis in the company’s federal application.

Patrick Woodcock, director of the Gov. Paul LePage’s Energy Office, said his office’s main concern is that “these projects don’t move forward without also leaving some gas for our customers in Maine.”
