Lawmaker seeks addition of 3 casinos statewide

State Sen. Linda Valentino, D-Saco, is proposing a measure that would set up casinos in three other regions, but it’s likely to face pushback from existing casinos and other groups.

The Associated Press reported that Valentino’s proposal comes after a state-commissioned study released last year said that Maine could support more casinos, namely one in southern Maine and a smaller one in Aroostook County. The study was conducted by New Jersey-based WhiteSand Gaming, which provides consulting services for gambling companies and manages its own casinos.

Valentino’s proposal would call for the creation of five casino regions, with the launch of a bidding process to open casinos in the three regions that currently lack them. A bid for a license would cost $5 million, far more than the approximately $200,000 Hollywood Casino in Bangor and Oxford Casino had to pay for initial fees.

The Bangor and Oxford casinos would likely oppose the proposal over concerns that more competition will hurt already dwindling revenues, the news agency reported.
