Portland may host Arctic conference

Portland may be the host for a 2016 international forum that would focus on environmental and economic issues concerning governments and indigenous people in Arctic territories.

The Portland Press Herald reported that two State Department officials and the conference coordinator for The Arctic Council’s Senior Arctic Officials meeting are in Maine this week to determine whether Portland should host the conference. They are scheduled to meet with Icelandic shipping container company Eimskip USA, the Maine Port Authority and the Maine International Trade Center, among other groups.

The conference’s other possible location would be somewhere in Alaska, where it has been held before. The Arctic Council represents several countries, including Canada, Denmark, Finland, Russia, the United States, Iceland, Sweden and Norway.
