Kittery shipyard gets $9.8M for repairs

The Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery is receiving $9.8 million from the U.S. Navy for a repair and modernization project.

U.S. Sens. Susan Collins and Angus King announced Wednesday that federal funding will support repairs to the shipyard’s electrical system, fire protection system and a pump well on one of the shipyard’s dry docks.

“The Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery is an economic engine that drives the economy of southern Maine and New Hampshire,” Collins and King said in a joint statement. “We have long advocated for the Navy to address modernization needs at the shipyard and are pleased that they plan to make these important improvements. These repairs will help improve the safety and efficiency of the terrific workforce that keeps our nation's nuclear submarines ready for sea every day.”
