Three Portland restaurants ban food critic

Three restaurants in Portland have banned a well-known food critic after warning him they would do so if he reviewed one of them again.

The Portland Press Herald reported that John Golden, who writes The Golden Dish blog on MaineToday.com, was notified last week by the restaurants’ owners that they will no longer serve him at Hugo’s Restaurant, Eventide Oyster Co. and The Honey Paw.

Andrew Taylor and Mike Wiley, who collectively own the restaurants with Arlin Smith, told the newspaper they banned Golden because he is unprofessional. They had previously warned Golden that he would be banned if he reviewed one of their restaurants again — which he did, with a positive review of The Honey Paw.

Golden called the ban "ridiculous," but said he wasn't surprised that it happened.
