Measure could boost federal contractors in Maine

A congressional committee has accepted a measure into the defense budget bill that would expand opportunities for federal contractors in Maine, including those at Brunswick Landing.

The Portland Press Herald reported that U.S. Sen. Angus King successfully pushed an effort to expand the HUBZone program, which gives preferential consideration for government contracts to certain businesses located at closed military bases, like Brunswick Landing. U.S. Rep. Bruce Poliquin also has introduced his own HUBZone expansion measure into the House of Representatives’ version of the defense budget bill, which will be voted on Friday.

If the HUBZone expansion measure doesn’t survive defense spending deliberations — like it has in the past — U.S. Sen. Susan Collins has introduced a stand-alone bill that would expand the HUBZone program. King is co-sponsoring the bill.

Heather Blease, CEO of Brunswick-based call center SaviLinx, has previously told Mainebiz that expanding the HUBZone program would help her company win federal contracts.
