Maine Med tops 'Common Care' rankings

Maine Medical Center in Portland is among 34 hospitals nationwide to receive the highest ranking across five categories in a new list from U.S. News & World Report.

The hospital announced Wednesday that it was rated as “high performing” for heart bypass surgery, hip replacement, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, heart failure treatment and knee replacement in the publication’s Best Hospitals for Common Care ratings.

Maine Medical said it was the only hospital in Maine and northern New England to receive the distinction for all five categories. Other top performing hospitals included the Cleveland Clinic and Massachusetts General Hospital.

"As the state’s largest tertiary care and referral center — and only Level I trauma center — our clinicians and staff treat the widest range of conditions in northern New England," Richard Petersen, Maine Medical’s CEO and president, said in a prepared statement. "This recognition from U.S. News & World Report shows that whether we’re providing common procedures or complex treatments, our commitment to quality and excellence is making a difference for the people in our communities."
