USM names new president after first choice leaves

The University of Southern Maine has named Glenn Cummings as its new president after the university’s first choice unexpectedly dropped out.

The Portland Press Herald reported that Cummings, a former speaker of the Maine House who currently serves as the University of Maine at Augusta’s interim president, will take over the position from USM’s interim leader, David Flanagan, on July 1.

Harvey Kesselman was originally slated to become USM’s next president, but said on Wednesday that he is stepping away from the offer to continue his work at Stockton University in New Jersey, where he is currently acting president. Kesselman was asked by Stockton University’s board to remain there because of turmoil at the school, according to the Bangor Daily News.

“Harvey Kesselman’s long, capable service and dedication to Stockton University were among the qualities that made him such an appealing choice to join our leadership team in Maine,” University of Maine System Chancellor James Page said in a prepared statement. “While we sincerely enjoyed getting to know Dr. Kesselman and looked forward to working together, we respect his decision and admire his devotion to Stockton.”
