Bangor Region Chamber CEO to step down

Bangor Region Chamber of Commerce CEO and President John Porter has announced that he plans to step down this August to take a new job.

Porter said in a Wednesday email to chamber members that he has accepted a position with MaineHealth in Portland as a system director for marketing and communication. His last day is Aug. 28, which he said will give him to time “to say a proper farewell.”

“I want you to know now just how grateful I am for the opportunity given to me to try to make a difference for this wonderful community,” Porter said.

Chamber board Chairwoman Renee Kelly is expected to begin the search process for Porter’s successor soon, Porter said, adding that he’s “confident that with a terrific board and an outstanding staff, the chamber will continue to thrive.”

Porter’s announcement comes at a time when several regional and local chambers are undergoing leadership changes. Most recently, the Penobscot Bay Regional Chamber of Commerce named former Make-A-Wish Maine President Thomas Peaco as its new leader.
