The local company behind the soon-to-open Portland Science Center is calling it the first and only exhibition center of its kind in Maine.

Portland Exhibits LLC said Tuesday that the center is expected to open in late June or early July in a 15,000-plus-square-foot exhibition space at 68 Commercial St. A job fair is being held on-site Friday for multiple positions.

Portland Exhibits is a subsidiary of The Gold Group, a Salem,Mass.-based entertainment marketing, public relations and promotional marketing agency that lists Marvel, the National Geographic Museum and Radio City Music Hall among many other clients on its website.

Joe Gold, principal for The Gold Group, said the center aims to “be the first and foremost venue to showcase the world’s most important and extraordinary exhibitions for the first time ever to the state of Maine and northern New England.”

Beyond serving as an educational venue, the company said it also hopes the center will serve as another economic driver for Portland’s downtown.

“We are a local company that is excited to be bringing world-class educational exhibits to Maine audiences,” Gold said. “We’re investing a considerable amount in the new exhibition space including renovations, promotion, and advertising. The spinoff economic impact will help all merchants in the Old Port as we encourage our visitors to shop and dine locally when they attend the exhibition."
