Alfond siblings tie in list of wealthiest Mainers

The two richest Maine residents are siblings Bill and Susan Alfond, each with an estimated net worth of $1.2 billion, according to a Forbes magazine ranking.

Forbes’ 2015 The Richest Person In Every State Net Worth ranking listed Bill Alfond, 67, as residing in Belgrade. His Forbes profile says his father sold his Dexter Shoe Co. to Warren Buffet in 1993 in exchange for Berkshire Hathaway stock, whose rising value created a fortune for the Alfonds. The father later focused on philanthropy, donating millions to universities and hospitals in Maine before dying in 2007, according to Forbes.The four Alfond siblings shared the fortune he left.

Bill’s sister Susan, 70, who tied him for wealth at $1.2 billion, is listed as living in Scarborough.

Other billionaires known to own land or summer homes in Maine include John Malone, David Rockefeller, Robert Bass, Edward C. Johnson and his family, Charles Butt, and brothers Mitchell and Steven Rales, according to the Bangor Daily News.
